Beautify Your Bedroom With a New Bed Comforter

!±8± Beautify Your Bedroom With a New Bed Comforter

Comforters add color and style to any bedroom. They are soft and snuggly. Sizes range from single bedding to king size bedding. There are three weights: lightweight which is good for all seasons, medium which is the most popular all year round, and heavy which is good for very cold winter climates. Goose down, duck down or man-made fibers are used for making the comforters. There are a variety of bed comforters including Pacific Coast, allergy free, down and bed comforter sets.

Pacific Coast comforters use a Barrier Weave fabric and 300 or 500 count 100% cotton fabric. They are stitched in blocks which keeps the goose feathers in place and the comforter fluffy.

If you have allergies, look for a comforter that is hypoallergenic. Primaloft, silk and wool fibers are available fabrics. Purchase a duvet cover to protect the comforter from dirt and impurities, and to limit the number of washings.

Comforters are packed tightly when shipped. Therefore, remove the comforter from its package and gently fluff it. It may take several hours or a day to recover its fluffiness. Also, you may want to hang it on a clothesline to air outside to remove the packaging material odor. Over the lifetime of the comforter air it two or three times a year outside in cool, breezy weather. If that's not possible place it in a dryer on the fluff cycle.

Comforters should be washed as little as possible. Never use bleach or fabric softeners. Use the gentle cycle on the washing machine, fill with warm water and use a mild soap. Do two rinse cycles. Never line dry the wet comforter. Tumble dry it on low heat for two to four hours. Use two clean tennis balls to break up clumps. Store the clean comforter in a cotton cover, never plastic.

Chic comforter bed sets will give your bedroom style and class. Before making your purchase choose a theme, a color scheme, the material, and your price range.

When picking a theme consider your lifestyle, your existing bedroom decor and your personality. The right choice will bring you years of comfort and enjoyment. Some possible themes are floral, stripes, plaids, black and white, sports, music, animals, etc. Let your imagination "run wild" - it's part of the fun when decorating your bedroom with a new bed comforter.

Choosing the right colors is important. Green or blue provide calmness and relaxation. Black adds a dramatic flare. Red is sexy. Neutral colors provide balance, but consider adding a splash of color to make a statement. When possible, get a swatch of the fabric to determine if the color and texture will complement your existing bedroom decor.

!±8± Down Alternative Comforter - What Are Your Choices?

When it comes to your bed, nothing beats the warmth and comfort that a down comforter provides on a cold winter night. But are there any down alternative comforters for those who may be allergic to goose down? Let's take a look.

Fortunately, there are some down alternative comforters to choose from. You can find hypo allergenic comforters and others made out of synthetic materials as well.

Keep in mind that most of the these alternatives will not be as warm as goose or duck down, but they are a very close match. The main benefit of course is that you will completely eliminate the allergy risk.

Some comforters are made from the wool of llamas, which can be quite comfortable in most cases. The material is lighter than the wool from sheep and should not present an allergy risk.

Hypo allergenic down comforters will in many cases also trap the dust mites and other particles that accumulate over time. It prevents the particles from being inhaled and causing an allergic reaction.

Some common down alternative comforter brands to look for include brands such as Primaloft, Hyperclean and TempraKON.

So, if you suffer from allergies, don't feel you're out of luck when it comes to a comforter. With just a little searching, you can quickly find the perfect down alternative cover.

Are Down Comforters Hypoallergenic?

!±8± Are Down Comforters Hypoallergenic?

Hypoallergenic is another way of saying super clean, and in the case of down comforters super clean actually has a very specific, technical definition. A hypoallergenic down comforter has an oxygen number of 10 or less and a turbidity rate of 300 mm or more. But what does that mean in plain language?

Oxygen number and turbidity are the two tests that determine the cleanliness of down. Down processing plants frequently submit their products to labs that perform these tests to assure that their down is up to standards. In order for sellers to claim or label their down products as "hypoallergenic," they must pass the strictest standards of cleanliness.

Oxygen number determines the amount of foreign organic matter found on the surface of the down and feathers. To qualify as "clean" the oxygen number must be less than 10, but it must be less than 4.8 to qualify as super clean, or hypoallergenic. Turbidity determines the amount of dust in feathers and down products. Clean products have turbidity greater than 300 mm, but super clean / hypoallergenic products must be greater than 300mm.

So is a down comforter hypoallergenic? Yes some are, but the vast majority are not. Most down comforters pass the standard for "clean" products - which is still very good. But more and better cleaning techniques are used on down products that are hypoallergenic; consequently their price is a little higher.

There are several steps involved with preparing raw down and feathers for use in finished products. First, the down and feather material is taken to a down processing plant. There it is washed at high temperatures to remove all impurities. Down and feathers are sterilized during the drying process

All down processing plants must receive a sterilization permit if its product is for use in bedding. In the US, permits are most commonly issued by the State of Pennsylvania. A sterilization permit shows that the down processing plant follows proper quality assurance procedures.

Hypoallergenic down is super clean. It provides relief of allergy symptoms, and helps prevent allergic reactions by removing the cause: dust and allergens trapped inside the down. Washing your down comforter once or twice per year and using a duvet cover, will help maintain your down comforters super clean status for a long time.

With hundreds of generic down alternative comforters available from large department stores like Walmart, IKEA, Marshall's, Target, etc. for as low as 50, you might ask yourself - why would you spend almost twice as much on a Primaloft comforter? The answer is that not all comforters are created equal. Generic comforters use cheap synthetic materials, which are heavy and less breathable. These comforters also tend to absorb moisture from your body, which leads to them losing most of the fluffyness they had after a couple of months of use. On the other hand, Primaloft comforters are made with patented ultra-fine fibers, which create an incredibly lightweight, soft and comfortable insulation matched only by the best of down and feather. These fibers also whisk away moisture, making your sleep even more comfortable and leaving your comforter puffy much longer. Because of their
